Shooting bullet proof glass
« on: April 16, 2017, 01:04:02 am »
My nieces husband stopped by the house and asked if I wanted to shoot some bullet proof glass with him.  I jumped at the invitation.  How often does a person get to do that?  He had one small panel of glass.  We started out with the light artillery.   I shot an arrow out of a recurve bow.  It cracked the first layer of glass and flattened the point of the field tip.  He took the next turn and shot it with either a 9mm or a 40 cal.  I can't remember which gun he used.  It cracked the glass some more.  As soon as he shot he said something hit him in the arm.  We looked down and found his bullet.  It had bounced back and hit him.  It was still hot when we picked it up.   We were standing 25'-30' away from it.

It was my turn next.  I shot it with my .44 mag.  It stopped the bullet but it penetrated all of the layers.  I was pretty impressed with it.

It was his turn again and he got out a 12g. shotgun with a deer slug.  It blew clear through the glass and made a good sized hole.

Looks like a grand old time.
Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow.

It was interesting to see how well it stopped bullets.  The smaller calibers bounced off of it.

Ha! Ha!

Reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Bart goes over to Nelson's house and Nelson points out, "That's our SHOOTING CAR! Dad says only six more payments and it's all ours!"

Almost thirty years ago I was the general foreman on a job building a jail in east Texas. The county commissioners and the sheriff were at odds, and the commissioners refused his suggestions and did not allow any of his input. When we finished the jail, I moved on to another job, but I heard what happened when the architect, county commissioners and the sheriff did the walk through inspection. There were no bars in it. When the architect told them the glass was bulletproof, the sheriff pulled out his 357 magnum and blew a piece of it to pieces. I would have loved to see the reactions of the architect and the commissioners.

Yea sounds like a fun test. Also an example why a heavy arrow penetrates better then a lighter one.Comparing the weight of those two bullets.

Bet your "Grilled Cheese" would have blown right through on the first shot :)

Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

It would have cracked the first layer Pearly.  It's some tough stuff.  Even when it was shattered all the way through it was stopping bullets.  This glass came from a jail.  The inmates cracked it somehow.
