Look up the pocket chainsaw. I keep one on my truck, and have cut up to 10" trees with it (takes a while, but it works!)

Like Ballasted said, carry a chainsaw, or even better, an axe. People won't talk to you or question you.
And like Jim said, wearing a pair of headphones the size of Princess Leia buns is quite a bit more embarrassing.

Get one of those canes with a hidden samurai sword. Those things are SWEEEEET!!!

Seriously though, I  carry a small Li ion battery powered chain saw. Fits in my back pack and cuts through a 10" diameter log 4 times on one battery. It's nearly as quiet as a hand saw too. It's also far safer than a gas chainsaw.

Upgraded!  Pruned a couple of broom trees - the lengths are about 26" long and 2 or 3" diameter

If I have permission I carry the chainsaw in a big duffle bag. Don't care what people think, but I don't want to give any little kids nightmares.  :D
