Pacific Yew English Longbow 70" ntn 58#@28"
« on: March 25, 2017, 09:09:12 pm »
Well, that last English longbow I made decided not to cooperate.  >:( http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,58927.msg816441.html#msg816441  The stave had some twist that I thought I had licked but it came back to rear it's ugly head. (After I had shot it in and sent it to the customer, of course  ::) ) Working with natural staves sure can be humbling sometimes. He sent it back for me to fix and was very gracious about it, but I decided it wasn't worth the risk of trying to fix. I grabbed another (straighter) stave and got to work making him a replacement.   We made this one a little shorter and decided to go with the traditional bare grip with an inlaid horn strike plate. I'm really pleased with how this turned out and consider it an improvement on the previous bow.

That's a beautiful bow. Looks like it hits hard (SH)

Great bow.
Yeah, I've had 'em where the bend keeps returning especially after steaming. I've ended up using dry heat to sort of fix in the bend, years ago I had one that was driving me bonkers... got there in the end, I persevered 'cos it was gorgeous wood, look at the heart sap contrast on this baby (Low altitude English Yew!)

Nice looking bow, Weylin. And, I appreciate your honesty regarding the other not working out. That's usually a side of the story we don't always hear.

Very nice bow Weylin. That one should make its owner happy. I'm glad owner was understanding and everything worked out. You build some fantastic bows, I'm sure he realizes that.

Very classy looking elb Weylin.  That bow design has a way of looking sturdy yet extremely elegant Imo, especially when executed so well like you've done here. Too bad the previous one took on an attitude and reverted back to its natural twist,
reminds us what were working with though doesn't it. Still worth the effort to craft something from natural materials rather than some characterless medium.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.
