Watch pot it never boils
« on: March 18, 2017, 10:20:44 am »
But if you don't watch it bad things can happen. I was multitasking yesterday. Doing my real job but thought I could keep close enough to steam the second tip on the Elm stave Pnewton gave me. I looked from a little ways away and it looked kinda blue for steam. Sure enough pot ran empty. If I'm gonna get a bow from this one it'll be a bendy handle now.

That sucks bjrogg.Bad feeling seeing that blue color.I do the same thing over here trying to get more than one thing going at a time.I've seen it happen on a build-a-long video once too.Same outcome.Lucky enough length was there for a bow yet.
What kind of elm is it?

Yea Ed I was keeping an eye on the clock to. Never had the pot go dry that quick. Oh well could have been a lot worse. My brothers wouldn't have been very happy if I'd have burned the farm shop down.lol. I'm really not sure what kinda of Elm this is. Paul gave it to me last summer. I think American Elm is what grows here where I live. Paul's not very far from me. It might be something different though cause around here they only get about 6" maybe 8" diameter and the Dutch Elm disease gets them. I have noticed when I drive west of me still some big Elm. They might be a different subspecies. It sure seems softer than the dead standing ones we cut for firewood. That stuff is like cutting glass.

I'd say that type hardness drying is a good sign for your elm there.I burn red elm in the stove here too.Mostly from dead snags standing.Seems to hand split easier then too.Fresh cut this red elm here is not too good really in my experience for self bows although friends here use it for a core when laminating glass bows together.

You're not alone bj. I've done it more than once.

I was pretty sure you didn't Brad ;)
Stick bender, I shortened it and cut the handle off so I'm not giving up on it yet. I haven't built a bendy handle or a Elm yet so I'll have to give it a go.
