Food safe wood sealer............
« on: March 08, 2017, 04:42:59 am »
Was at a small Black Powder show over the week-end and picked up a Burl wooded Noggin (wooden cup). It's raw and needs to be sealed before use. I've heard of using Brewers pitch/Mineral oil and Bees wax - what say You ? Thanks Gang - Bob.

They make a food safe oil rub for spoons and bowls my buddy uses, not sure the name but he said he got it at wood crafters, it works great, just rub it on and let set, then wipe it off. I have used olive oil in the same way and it seemed to work fine, just have to redo now and then. :)

I've used mineral oil a lot before to keep plugs swelled on horn cups not in use.

Walnut oil should work to, Bobert.

Apparently Tung Oil is a food safe sealer, has to be pure though

A blend of mineral oil and beeswax is a standard homemade sealer

I make cutting boards and wooden spoons and always use mineral oil because it does not get rancid like food oils.

True Value Hardware sells cutting board/wood bowl oil. I also soak the handles of my good butcher knives in it.

I would do tung oil and shellac from button lac. Apparently a lot of finishes are food safe once cured, though.

One part beeswax to 3 or 4 parts flaxseed oil depending on how stiff you want it double boil and mix well when beeswax is melted.  I use this on carved wood spoons and bowls.
