Today's Osage harvest

From a tree that grew horizontally and was fairly dead

7-8" diameter 74" at the longest. One side has a branch...there will be knots on about 1/4th of each side.  About a 90 degree twist. Not Too ambitious is it?

Looks like there is some bows in there I don't know if those spiral grain peaces are bow worthy unless you have enough length  on the strait grain to get some billets I have a few of those spiral grain peaces in my last haul  that I'm going to cut for turning bowls or candle holders ,vases etc

There are some bows in there but it will take some untwisting to find them.

There are a couple of promising staves. If I stay to the inside of the curves (assuming the wood is good) and if I cut down to a 66" bow, I can avoid the worst bits. There are definitely some good short bows in there....I want to try some short Pyramid bows for my kids while I keep an eye out for a good 69" for myself.

66 in. Handled Osage Bow will work fine for you too if your draw is under 30 in.  If the wood is decent & you have enough width & you could make a 60 in bendy for your self also !  It always amazes me how little wood you need to make a bow out of hedge !

I worked one down today....OUCH. There was a big check line down the middle but I could tell that it didn't go all the way through...ended up going a good 3/4" in. I kept losing my ring. I THINK I got it lined back up. Was a good exercise.

Sadly...the one I was working today was just declared "a walking stick". There was a wierd internal split/twist and I ended up with grain runout at one end. Osage walking sticks look great though....just takes a few minutes on the belt sander.

you probably just need to sharpen it. easy enough with the right and cheap hand tools. Google it, youtube it...
