Kiowa style shortie
« on: February 14, 2017, 11:31:06 am »
Thought you'd like to see my Kiowa style shortie. This is my favourite by a long way now even though its just 40" ntn.
It's ash and is #50+ at 20 inches. Finished off with 2 ply rawhide string and red horsehair tassel held on with sinew wrap. Handle wrap is just for my own comfort. Shame it's only accurate to about 6yards! ;0) Definitely be making more of these short bows - I have some sinew all teased and ready to go on as a backing too which will be another first. See what you think.

Very cool.  I look forward to seeing more of your work.  Way to keep it all primitive.

You did a great job. I agree, accuracy is tough when your 8" short of your full draw. Keep the target within 10 yards and have fun.

Nice bend and work on the bow and string on that one.You got all you could out of that one I'd say.Do ya ever just shoot it right from your chest with a pinch hold onto the arrow?

Thanks for your comments. I was almost happy with the string as I was with the bow. Lots of experimenting with different hides and plies. Commercial rawhide lace I thought would be good as it looks so consistent but in actual fact it was awful and produced very brittle uncomfortable strings. 2 ply thin deer hide worked best in the end but I have read the squirrel also gives good results. Squirrels are considered practically pets in this country though so I'm not sure I'll get to test that! I’m going practice with the pinch grip when I have built some arrows to go with this…all I need then is a horse and I’m done.

if you practice you can get your accuracy out to 10 or 15,,,, definitely enough to shoot a deer,, or squirrel,,:)
