two more carved masks
« on: February 15, 2017, 02:34:45 pm »
I was very occupied lately with my job, the kids and, sadly, the flue and the dentist.
Luckily, These masks are made quite quickly. From basswood, sheep skin and deer teeth.

The first one's hanging on the outside of my workshop, the second one at work.

Thanks all. I'm practising and still have quite a way to go. Yet to make a full size wearable mask, too.

Switzerland has a rich culture of carved Fastnacht-masks. Fastnacht is the carneval festivities to drive out winter. These old masks I find very inspiring. For mine, I chose a more african approach to the eyes, though.

Run a pic search for "Tschäggätä" or "Krienser Maske" if you wanna see some. Regrettably, ever since the Lord of the Rings movies, all newly produced masks are the same old orc. Same is true for the austrian "Krampus" and "Percht" that is part of the Fastnacht, as well.

Don't shoot!
