getting pretty thin

Hi all, I'm working on a hickory bow (sorry no pics) and am puzzled by something. Its a short bow, 59" (all I had to work with) and 1 5/8' wide at the fades. Tillering is coming along nicely but I'm only at 19" draw at 40# and its already only about 1/4" thick mid limb and I got a ways to go. Is this bow too wide for its length? Has a little crown but not much. Don't really care what poundage and draw length I end up with, I usually make them 45# @ 28'.
Thank you much

You might have to side tiller or narrow the bow some.Sounds like a good piece of wood.

keep in mind the ratio of wood removal to weight reduction increases,, as the bow gets thinner,,
you are probably closer than you think,, thin is ok,,but side tillering is ok too,,

I would keep tillering and give it plent of excersize. You are not really wide enough for that length of bow. Is it a stiff handle? Make sure you have all of the limb working . The mid limb should be much different than the inner or outer limbs, maybe just a very slight taper.

! and 5/8" wide/1/4" thick midlimb at 40#'s @ 24" sounds about right.Your first numbers sounded a lot different.

For shorter bows made from dense wood, you can expect the limbs to end up fairly thin. This isn't harmful, it just means that each scrape impacts the draw weight and tiller of the bow more than it would if you were working on a longer, narrower bow.
