3 Under Tiller question
« on: January 29, 2017, 06:06:37 pm »
Red Oak Board bow 69" ntn. Currently at 44#@26.5" (I draw about 28").

Looking at the tiller, the bow responds differently depending on which end is up...I am holding the arrow on my hand 1.25" above center (I intend to cut a shelf but haven't yet).

I know I still have evening out to do and I will be sanding as well and don't want to reduce the weight a whole lot.
What do you see about the potential of Side A or B being on top?

It shoots pretty well (short drawing)

A has more bend (that bend is in the set unstrung too) and has slight hinge...B will need to be reduced more.
This is "A Top"

Looks like the inner third on both limbs need to work a little bit.  Limb A appears to be weaker and really bending in the outer 1/2.  Got an unstrung pic?
Enjoy the hunt!  Mitch

Those inners could definitely bend more. When I start to tiller a static handle bow I usually try to get the inner limbs bending a little first and go out from there.

Limb "A" on left. It feels like a good thing to have positive tiller.

That bump that set in is from loading it too fast too soon....I can't see subtleties yet. Learning!

The first pic looks better but still needs a lot of work.

I would use limb "a" as the upper limb and get the inner 1/3 of each limb working.  Do you have a tillering gizmo?  That might help you get them bending  a bit more even.  Are you string walking shooting the Hill?
Enjoy the hunt!  Mitch

Agreed. I cut in a narrow shelf just now. I don't have a tiller stick yet so I have to use a camera for now.

And yes, that Hill bow was very tolerant to 3 under and light string walking while still staying quiet.
Would be nice to copy that if I can figure it out.

Getting closer. I just rasped around the fades and took down some humps mid limbs and near the tips. I have started to radius the grip and shelf. Good news is that it shoots straight. I just used it for my 'first shot of the day' on leatherwall. Guessed my gap and was just a few inches high.

3 under puts more stress on the bottom limb, so If I know someone is going to shoot 3 under I make the bottom a bit stiffer that I normally would. :)

Your bottom lib is already weaker and it will become more so over time, especially if you shoot three under and string walk as well.

Not so easy to see in that picture, but it looks like your lower is bending more than the upper, and the upper is a smidge stiff in the outer third, if you get that bit working It would probably come out just right
