Little wooden mask I whittled this weekend

from a branch of limewood (dyed with steelwool-vinegar) and a bit of  skin from a grey heath (a local moorland sheep) for the hair.

That looks ace!,  I do like that.  8),  the steel wool/vinegar worked well on the lime,  good to know.

I didn't know about the iron oxide and vinegar finish for lime either - it turns oak a lovely deep black - wonder what other wood it reacts with. I know it reacts with the tanin, but I have no idea which timbers contain it. Its a cracking carving btw, not my style but nice work all the same I think if you did it in green oak, the same finish would ebonise it quite convincingly.

Lol,  looks like Carla of the "Chew" a cooking
show here in the states.
Jodo, for some reason I always thought you were from the
Northwest USA. When I read the post I thought Baskerville UK.
(moors and all).
I am always looking for unusual ways to finish stone bone and wood.
Thanks for posting a cool piece of art. I need to do some similar.

Thanks guys,

I tried the iron acetate on all kinds of wood. Some go blackish, some brown, hazel turns into a ugly grey. lime is pretty nice. oak and alder go deep black immediately.

I tried it on some seasoned Holly and it went a blotchy green,  could make an interesting effect,  maybe bad teeth for a mask.  :D
