Refurbishing Broad Axes

My buddies up at deer camp unloaded a pile of axes and tools on me, to be reconditioned and hung on my hand carved handles.  Included are a couple of broad axes, which I've never dealt with before.

I'm wondering if any of you know or have a good resource where I can figure out handle lengths and styles to put on them. And how much offset to put into them. They'll be hickory or ironwood, I don't have any ash ready at the moment.

Theres a great book by eric sloane called "a museum of early american tools" that is a great reference for this kind of thing. I will look at it and post later when I get home.

I just rehandled a double ax last week I got at the flea market for $8. picture tomorrow. I'd love to have one of those wide ones.

Those are sweet! Are they ridged on both sides or are they flat for Hewing on the other side? Cheers- Brendan

They're single bevel hewing, slightly scalloped. The edges on both of them are massacred right now, but they'll clean up.

Can't wait to see those finished. I truly enjoy seeing old tools brought back to use. I am working on several planes and an old broad hatchet. Those tools should serve their new owners well.
