A cheap simple display
« on: December 05, 2016, 01:40:58 pm »
Wasn't sure where to post this so I put it here around the campfire. I made a real simple display for my 1st primitive bow kill. 1st I freeze the entire head to get hide frozen to skull. This keeps fur and skin from just moving back and forth when I cut skull with sawsall. Then I have someone hold head by the antlers and saw off top of skull (I then save the brains). Then I thaw and skin top of skull and simmer in a pot for awhile. It doesn't take very long for just skull cap. Then it's easy to clean any flesh off skull or base of antlers.  Then I just took a scrap piece of pine board penciled on a arrowhead and cut it out with jig saw. Then I "knapped" it on bench grinder. Then a light sanding and stained it. 2 coats off tru oil and screw skull on arrowhead plaque with tiny torques head screws. I wrote some information on back. I put my broken arrow (still missing about 8" of shaft and broadhead I hope to yet find) on the antlers. I can either use it as display on flat surface like my desktop or shelf or hang it on wall.

Looks good bj, and congrats on your first primitive kill

Nice job, BJ. There isn't anything like that first primitive bucky. My first is almost a twin to yours.

Thanks Guys, don't think rest of arrow is in stew Ruddy. 8" of arrow passed through other side of deer and that's where it broke off. I know it's in about a 30 yard path still hoping to find it when stuff freezes off for the winter.
This is a pretty simple way to handle a deer skull cap. I have done them this way for a long time. I have some bigger but none that mean as much to me as this one. Sure would be cool if this was how everyone hunted. Your right Pearl this is a real trophy to me. Thanks for all the kind words guys

Thanks again Paul, my memory ain't what it used to be but I doubt I'll ever forget this one. Still I always write on back off plaque or skull.
Hunter Bob I saved the brains for tanning my deer hide. I have never done it yet but i believe I can get it done mostly a lot of elbow grease scrapping and stretching hide.

Thanks Bill,Thanks Don but really I'm just an old farmer that loves screwing around with this stuff. I guess in that since I am. Many more seasons to you Zuma and may they be bountifully healthy ones
