Baculum...anyone use one?
« on: November 23, 2016, 08:17:35 pm »
A recent discussion about ivory and baculum bones being used in knapping....anyone every used a baculum bone?

Also wondering about using animal teeth such as fox or beaver teeth for edge work or base notching?

Beaver teeth have been found in burial sites I believe.

Any thoughts or ideas for using these?

There are no bad knappers, only bad flakes

Beaver teeth were used for woodworking. They might be good for knapping too. Cheers- Brendan

Beaver tooth works very well for very fine edge serrations. Just need to mount it in a handle for ease of applying force. The hollow jaw end needs to be stabilized with some type of glue filler to strengthen the tooth prior to mounting in handle.

I've tried boar hog cutters for edge work. It worked pretty good.

I've heard Marty mention teeth being good or not; can't remember off hand which. As for ivory; walrus and elephant would be good if found legally. Not sure on the baculum bone. I know he said hippo ivory is too hard although Jim Winn has some videos using it.

Lyman, I have messed around  with beaver teeth but didn't like the results, gave a ton of them to Bonepile and he made a great looking necklace out of them, seemed better fitted for jewelry than tools. I have a few coon  baculum that I think would work.  Bob
