Is this some kind of chert?
« on: November 05, 2016, 02:08:52 pm »
Found some of this in a rock garden type thing in a parking lot in Victoria... most was really course grained and full of freeze cracks? They were all about fist sized. This stuff is a lot finer grained and has silver and gold specks in it. Pyrite? It percussion flakes very good. Pressure flakes not too good. It's really hard. Haha heat it maybe? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks- Brendan

Looks like some kind of chert. Most gardening stores and landscaping places will have cherts mixed.

Its not rhyolite.

I have found some of the exact same stuff.  I call it chert. It is a crypto-crytalline Chalcedony. Not quite agate.

I think heating will really help it.

There are some mixed in with precious metals, copper gold etc.

The greenish tint is most likely from copper/iron.

Thanks Jason! I didn't think it was rhyolite from what I could see online. I'll try and heat some up, see if it helps. Cheers- Brendan
