Whats a good deer gun for a 11 year old.

My boy is a great shot with his 22 and I think he is getting an upgrade this Christmas. He hasnt shot with a scope yet, though I think he wants too. I want him to be able to be in a stand, but mostly he will be ground, and in the woods. Whats a good gun to get him?

He does like his lever .22 Henry. Any good brands for a lever 30 30? Is it much kick? Whats a good range and ammo for one? Do they s ope well or is iron sights best?

Most 30-30s you're gonna find will be Marlins, but Winchesters are fairly common as well. I've never seen a 30-30 by any other manufacturer, but I'm far from an expert, so take that for what its worth.

I liked my marlin pretty well, but I can't say whether its suitable for an eleven year old. I don't remember it kicking too bad, but I was grown when I bought it so who knows. I know a Marlin will take a scope well because I had one on mine. A Winchester ejects out the top though, so you'd need an off-center scope mount, which may require a gunsmith. I'm not sure.

Rossi makes a single shot rifle called the Wizard with barrels you can change. Id get a 243 barrel and they sell them in combos where you can get the 243 barrel and a 20 gauge shotgun barrel. It has a double safety on the hammer. I have one in 30-06 and it's my favorite rifle. They are priced right.

I bought my daughter a Remington bolt action .243 at walmart this summer.  It was easy to sight in.  She will be deer hunting with it soon.  I want to test it out on a doe also.

We can't use center shoot rifles here for deer, only shotgun and muzzle loaders. I might be old and silly but I love single shots especially for kids. They are light, simple and make you think about the shot your going to take. You don't have to worry about if there is another shell  in the chamber unless you put it there. I have a 16 g, a .223, and got a H&R 20g with rifled barrel for my son. I used his 20 g last year and it is a sweet gun, but I believe H&R got bought out and new owners dropped the single shots. ( that doesn't make me happy with them). You can get used ones but the prices went way up.

My kids share a 1987 feather light bolt action Winchester 270. My 12 yr old daughter smoked a doe last year with it. Very light and has little kick. I just don't let them target shoot with it. They always target shoot with 22 and 17. With scopes that away in the deer fields there use to a scope. My buddies at work swear up and down on the youth savage axis 243. But they out grow them to fast. Good luck

My pick would be like others--
.243 hands down. Bolt action. Iron sights to begin with.
Better for the woods.
Add a scope when he gets proficient for long range,
varmints and antelope etc.
