bamboo (not horn) Asiatic bow materials
« on: September 21, 2016, 05:31:11 am »
Morning!

So, if you wanted to build a bamboo and sinew Asiatic bow, what bamboo should you use, and does it have to season first? Also, I have laurel, cherry, blackthorn, hawthorn, yew, bird-cherry, hazel, ash, holly, yellow pine and apple - are any of them OK for the core - I don't have any maple, only sycamore

very interesting. I wonder if the bamboo used for yumi would work well..
or what species of bamboo was used for the bamboo/sinew bow recommended for beginners by Gao Ying...
or how common bamboo/sinew bows were in warfare with horse archers..

could ask the medicinebows guy

Contact James Parker. James builds beautiful, authentic Asiatic Horn bows and I know he has built one with fire tempered boo belly. If I remember correctly James used maple(limb core?) and Spanish cedar it this bow.

I made a successfull  bow , using bamboo instead of horn on an asian style bow...it even won bow of the month several yrs ago!!!

I used moso bamboo and heat tempered it.....it must definitely be properly seasoned...you want hard old strong bamboo...
'expansion and compression'.. the secret of life is to balance these two opposing forces.......

James Parker sells all of the material you need to build a bamboo or horn bow.
Lakeland, Florida
If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

had a ball reading the Atarn files on Gao Ying, never heard of him before Loon mentioned him - highly recommended for any one else who hasn't read Gao's thoughts on archery technique - pointed out to me several errors in my technique in grip and draw - thanks Loon
