Does anyone know if hornstone can be heat treated?

I've never heard of anybody needing too. But I guess it might be worth a shot.

Scott, never tried it but according to Mark Bracken's website Kentucky hornstone is on the no list along with Tenn. Ft. Payne and the Dover and NY. Onondaga and a few others

Check out his site a lot of info on heat treating recipe's. Bob

Well I've never heard of it either so I probably oughta just leave well enough alone. Get whatcha got sorta thing.

I agree with the others. I have collected and viewed
quite a bit of hornstone out on the Ohio River.
Indiana and Kentucky. I never did see any heated debitage.
Throwing a few hunks in with some other stuff could be
interesting?

Yeah I find flakes like that in almost any material.
I more or less chalk them up to being cooked in an open fire pit.
Not so much intentional. The sites I used to hunt repeatidly,
would usually have many heat altered flakes in the same area.
Usually the ones flaked off of heated preforms.
I hate no till farming

Don't know why you'd need to. If it chipped any easier it'd make itself into a point.
