May have cut down the wrong tree

Ok so this whole identify trees thing is pretty difficult. Especially when vines attack every tree so their leaves are 10-15 up in the air. I thought I cut down an American hophornbeam which is native to central florida.  What do you think I cut down?



What made me think it was HHB was I found these all over quite a few trees that look similar to this one

If you crush the leaves do they have a strong smell?

I'm not familiar with your woods down there, but my guess is live oak and that's only a guess.  Id'ing trees can be rough.  Here's one of my worst incidents that turned out to be one of my best times harvesting bow wood. http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,40544.msg542679.html#msg542679  Everybody boo boo's now and again.  I'd try it out.  It might be good stuff, whatever it is.  Josh

Kinda what I was thinkin. It's pretty wood. I've done ruined 3 hackberry staves and haven't got one to bow dimensions yethe. Hopefully I'll get it right with this stuff. I've been looking for hickory and have yet too find any.

That is a conifer judging by the pieces you picked up. Those look like pieces of pine cone. Do the leaves look like needles? Do the cut places ooze sap?

well i have an app on my phone that the university of florida put together for trees in central florida. and from everything on there it looked like a red bay. it doesnt really have a smell or anything. im gonna work with it and see what i can come up with. but if someone knows exactly what this is id be estatic

It has weird leaves. When they're small they look like oak. When they grow out. Not so much as seen in the pics above.

Every oak I know of produces acorns. Nothing like the seed pods you show there.

that looks like a cone off a conifer, but the leaf looks like its off something else....where they on the floor nearby , or both on the growing tree?

I believe that Red Bay is in the magnolia family. I don't think that "cone" is from the red bay. Red bay do have a seed pod but the cone looks to be from a pine of some sort.

It's a green, Long Leaf Pine cone. The pine needles are all over the ground under your tree. If you look close at the little limb under your log you will see the bark of a pine tree on it. I don't know by the picture if the small limb is attached to your tree. If you really want to know what fruit is in your hand, bite down on one of those seed pods in your hand. :D

The pine cone and seeds were just in the ground. Back yard is covered in pines.
The leaves pictured are from the tree. The wood is like a reddish color
