How Long For Rawhide Backing
« on: August 08, 2016, 07:26:30 am »
I recently finished a rawhide backing on a hickory board bow.  I used Titebond III to glue it down and I have the sides all sanded.  Can you tell me how long I need to wait till I draw the bow?
Thanks,
Will B.

I'd wait a week.Personally I try to go by a 10 day rule.Might be a bit much for some but I like to make sure.

A lot depends on the R/H in your area. Generally TB glues should cure 24 hours before stressing but the bow wood will absorb some of the moisture from the glue and all of that needs to dissipate first and hickory is quite hygroscopic. Keeping it in the A/C will help speed it up.

Thank you Pat B. and Beadman.  I will move the bow inside the house and wait a minimum of ten days.   ;)

I followed Mike Clancy's directions and put 2 sizing coats of TBII mixed with water on bow 1st then TBII on rawhide. Mike said to wait 14 days till you could sting bow to dry wood back out to prevent set and cast problems

Hot box would be fine if it is on low heat. TB glue breaks down at 150deg(F)
