40" sinew backed, snake skin covered hazel
« on: July 30, 2016, 05:59:14 am »
My newest sinew backed bow made from european hazel (corylus avellana). Some of the reflex was made during drying the stave and the rest of it with perry-glueing the sinews. I used approx. 50 grams of (ostrich leg) sinew and glued them with gelatine powder and then covered with rat snake skin which is also glued with gelatine. I did order a dark skin with white/light pattern but what I got was a vice versa, heh. Sinew wraps at limbs and tips.

101cm ntn, 35mm wide, has 7cm of reflex, pulls somewhere around 35-40#@20", smooth to draw and shoots nicely

Just to say, the tiller is now afterwards a little bit fixed at the mid limbs

Thank you!

Beadman - hazel is good at tension and works even if crowned. The problem is the compression strenght as it tends to chrysal easily and therefore the belly should be flat and deeply heat-treated. I sinewed this one to have better unbraced profile and to reduce the stress on belly side (perry-glueing).

I have never seen a sinewed hazel and skins like this.
Also never seen a hazel that short. Hazel is o.k. for longer designs in my eyes, for bows that short I would definetely use better wood.

But anyway your bow is successful, nicely executed and very unique!
Congrats!
