Also handy is an old file with the teeth ground off and then stoned flat to a turned edge. The hardness of the file really keeps an edge.
I also round the two end corners of the file to 2 different radii -handy for scraping spot areas near knots, hollows, etc. I keep a narrow file handle on the tang end -- a file scraper can be used two handed or one.
