Hello - My First Bow Red Oak #30 @ 28"
« on: July 03, 2016, 10:53:57 pm »
Hello all,

I have been reading these boards this year as I found out about and developed an interest in bowmaking and I have certainly learned a lot and found a lot of inspiration looking at the cool bows you folks make.

I know nothing about archery really but I would like to learn and I have made what is technically a bow so I figure I can have a go at it.

I thought I would introduce myself with some bow pictures since folks seem to like that kind of thing around here. Thanks to my sister for her camera skills.

Happy to meet you all and look forward to benefiting from your wisdom with my future bows :)

You did a great job on that bow

Nice job on your 1st bow cantshoot. I know where your coming from, less than a year ago I had know idea I'd be building bows and arrows. I started knapping some stone my cousin brought when he came to visit, then I made some arrows. Of course I needed a bow so I made a bow. When I shoot my 1st bow I was totally hooked. Welcome to the site I think you're gonna like it here. Keep building those bows they'll keep getting better. I can't shoot either but I keep getting a little better.

Thanks for the positive comments :) I have already started the next one lol!

Making arrows would be nice but it's a bit daunting right now. So many different components...

My biggest regret is that it's too big to shoot in my basement. Can't shoot outside in the city here but I have 10 yards of unfinished basement that I can setup a target. Already used it for testing this one and I must have looked pretty silly crouching at full draw!

Welcome aboard cantshoot. I wouldn't guess that as a first bow for anyone looking at how nicely it is tillered, I believe there is a bright future of bow crafting ahead of you.  :) You look like a younger man and it is always cool to see people in your age group taking an interest in this form of archery and primitive skills. Looking forward to your next bow.
I'll add that if you can make a bow that well you'll do fine at arrow crafting too. A lot of the group here have no problem helping a newbie get started so if you could use a few supplies to start some arrow building let me know. I could send you a few arrow shafts, turkey feathers, sinew and field points by mail if you are in the U.S. Many others here have done the same for me and I'd be happy to pass it on. All the info your need to learn can be found on the forum.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.
