Bow Stave Choice?
« on: June 28, 2016, 08:29:21 am »
There is a company, am wood specialtys, that is offering Red Elm, Hickory, and Black Locust.

Which one of these would be my best choice?
I have very little hands on expeirence, the only experience I do have is with Osage.

Are you in southern ontario?   I've been to A+M in Cambridge.  Some of those staves don't look so hot.  Black locust would be the best choice because it is quite rot resistant, but last time I was there they didn't have any.

I would be more concerned with the work-ability of the stave rather than wood species. Try to find a nice straight one with as few knots as possible. The cleaner and straighter the stave the better chance you'll end up with a shooter.
I have nothing but scorn for all weird ideas other than my own.

Well for a beginner I'd definitely go with Hickory, can take alot more stress and it's way more forgiving (even with run-offs).. Unless it's a high draw weight you're aiming for.

That was dumb on my part.
Yes they are staves.

After what bubbles said, I decided not to chance it.

Thank You for the replies.

Definitely pass on those. The Elm is rotten, the Hickory bug infested and both are stored in poor conditions for non-rot resistant woods.
