Pine wood!?
« on: June 20, 2016, 11:20:38 am »
Hello everyone,
Here's one more of my many questions,
I've never taken in consideration Pine wood for making bows because it's obviously a softwood, weak in tension and compression.

I was wondering however, if it would be possible to make a bow out of a pine broom handle if heat treated on the belly and backed with sinew?

For example and ELB, flattening one side of the handle and leaving the other side rounded.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work from the little knowledge I have..
However I still wanted to make sure, let me know guys!

I'd say probably not. There has to be other woods you can find that would be more appropriate for bows.

I want to say there's an example of a white pine bow in TBB4. Can't remember for sure.

reaction compression pine if high humidity can bend a lot in compression apparently
otherwise you'd have to do a gigantic paddle bow or draw a 70" bow 12"? :p
it would be a waste of sinew to use it on non-reaction pine wood..

If you can find some compression pine, and back it with something like birch you can make a normal sized bow up to at least 100lb.  It's been done plenty of times before as it is the classic Sami bow, but the compression pine needs to be sourced carefully.

I would rather try a good grain 2x4 and keep it as wide as it is at the fades.
