Black walnut reflex deflex teaser
« on: March 08, 2016, 09:21:40 am »
Here's a few teaser pics of the walnut reflex deflex I started at MoJam last summer. It came out at 45 lbs at 26" draw. It already had that shape in stave form but I steamed it into a bit more reflex at the git go. I braced it up at too high of draw weight and all that reflex pulled out pretty quickly then stopped once it reaches its original starting point. So I heat treated some of that reflex back and re tillered. It held more of it the second go and the heat treating added quite a bit of weight to it. More pics will come once the finish is done.

That looks real nice.  I have made one black walnut bow and I think it makes a nice shooting bow.  I really like the handle on yours. Looks like nice contrast with the heart wood.

I did not know that Black walnut made a good selfbow!
Is it the sapwood from under the bark?
Looking forward to seeing more!  :)

I actually chased a ring closer to the heartwood so I could get some color in it, I think I took about 1/2" of sapwood off.  The limbs are almost entirely sapwood and the heartwood ends where the fades end. One limb has one large knot and the other limb has three that aren't small but are smaller than in the other. So far it's second walnut bow I've made. And this one shoots much better than the first one. The first one I didn't heat treat so that might by one reason.

Flipping through pictures on my phone  and thinking about my next walnut bow, while bored at work, I realized I never posted a full draw of my walnut reflex/deflex. And I've had it finished since Marxh. Though I did post it on Facebook. My Grampa has the bow at his house so I'm trying to remember the stats of it. It came out 45# at 25" and tillered to 26".  The limbs are 26", 1 3/4" wide, with about 6" of stiff handle. After getting it finished it was hard to give away. Short, hits hard, smooth drawing, and great colors. It took about 1 1/2" of set after heat treating in about 1" of reflex, starting with 2" of deflex. So there were net gains on this one after the heat treating.

Thanks for looking,
Kyle
