First Rock Point 😲
« on: June 02, 2016, 03:18:33 pm »
Hey guys,
Not sure if this is the appropriate section of the forum to post this..
Well, I had some free time and I decided to do something I had NEVER done before: Work on rock.

I was lucky enough to have a few pieces of rock in Brazilian it's called "Ardosia" ,
I don't know if I did it right , but I'm surely happy about my work.
It's nothing compared to the beauties that I see in this forum, but it's sharp, durable (I hope) and does it's job just about fine, so here is a picture of it!

PS: Sorry I didn't take a picture of the point only, I was too excited about it and forgot! 😂

By the way, it's surely addictive I probably won't stop any time soon.

Please give me some feedback and critique, that's what makes me better.

That rock looks like a slate or shale. You are correct it is addictive. As I said, have fun with it.
There are no bad knappers, only bad flakes

No, I did most of the work by pressure flaking , at the end I used some sand paper to make it a little smoother and finished it off with a small file (that may be it)

Tomorrow I'll try something with glass, should be better looking I hope 😊

Thanks for your feedback @le0n

^^ thanks.

glass is a wonderful medium to practice with.

in for the next set of photographs.

are you using a copper-tipped or steel-tipped pressure flaker or antler tine?

having the right tools makes a world of difference.

PM me your address and i'll make and send you some annealed copper bits that you can install into any hardwood branch. these won't bend like plain copper wire bends while pressure flaking.

like this (note the length of the bare bit):

drilled a hole in the other end and sunk it down with some fer-l-tite hot melt adhesive (i didn't have the right size bit, hah hah):

when it gets dull, you just lightly hammer the tip back into the shape you want.

if you don't have an anvil (i don't), just use another hammer as an anvil.

^^ that's a gifted branch from an orange tree and it works really well. thanks, Thunder!

you can also, install them into a 16"-18" x 1" dowel (oak) to make an ishi stick (google it).
