Can't figure out what kind of wood this is
« on: April 09, 2016, 09:18:55 pm »
It's about 3 1/2" in diameter. I have it roughed out to bow size already so these are just old photos. I've done research, but can't find out exactly what it is.

I will also note that I cut it down around January so there were no leaves to go by.

I'll second the hackberry I haven't tried it yet but have been told to heat treat the belly. I have a few staves look just like that.

Young hackberry, loves heat, dry and wet. My new favorite bow wood.

Well the bad news is that it snapped on the back side while I was tillering. This was my second bow, almost had it done too. There was a knot in the middle of one of the limbs and that's where it snapped. No worries though, these sort of things are going to happen.
The good news is this was another satisfying learning experience for me.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep in mind about the heat treating if I come across another one.

You cut it in January and tried making a bow from it now?  That might be rushing it a little.  Did you do any force drying to it?

A day after I cut it down I roughed it out to about bow size. Then I put it in a corner of my basement where it stays dry. But yeah..that was probably rushing it. I think I got a little carried away there.
