heat straightening tools

I want to make a tool like the ones shown at the top here

Has anyone used this sort of tool? Does it make it much easier than just doing it by hand with a towel or gloves? (for cane, specifically..)

Maybe I should just buy some soapstone at a craft store or something. Are there any good alternatives? Maybe clay, though the heat capacity would be much less I think. I could maybe put some sort of burner or something under a clay tool with that shape.

i don't know how much this will help but here's what i use.
its based on the one used in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_5Ha1qyFDo&nohtml5=False which  everyone on this forum should watch once or twice or maybe twelve times ;D

just a quick aside my tool is made for a lefty. and the wood is HHB. you should use something that is diffuse porous wood like maple or sycamore, sycamore and HHB also have interlocked grain making them even better for this type of tool ;)

Nice, I tried to make one out of antler but it's so hard to carve out... feel like hammer and chisel would work well, though. with a stable vise...

Mines out of Ocean Spray. I made the slot at a shallower angle so I can use it with one hand like the old Japanese fella in the video. The hole is for sharper bends(nodes). I put the traditional aluminum >:D wheel in it to do minor bends. That part doesn't seem to work very well.

I made my first from a poplar branch and it lasted for at least 2 dozen shafts.

I think tougher is better. Splitting that tab off the end is a real possibility. That said they're not that tough to make so use what you got.

Even with nothing more than a few trash knives, a Shinto rasp and a few stones?  :P
Thinking I should get some chisels... and just use them with a hammerstone. Should i get a masonry or wood chisel for cutting antler?
The Korean arrow straightening tool seems slightly different from the japanese one...

Cutting that notch without a drill could be a real chore. A rat tailed file I guess. Or the edge of a piece of sandstone. It's fun trying to figure out how they did things. It looks impossible but you know they did it. I guess once you stomach was full you had nothing but time.
