New 55#@28" might be the bow !!
« on: February 08, 2016, 04:34:47 pm »
After a break I've finally gotten back to bow making and I can say I'm so glad I decided not to give it up, I finally made a bow worth taking hunting, it actually has the best feel out of any bow ive made before and the second I let go of that first arrow I knew it was right, I just had that feeling.  I haven't posted anything in a while because of school and things but I figured why not ,  the only thing I could say bad about this bow is the way the glue lines came out on the tip overlays and the tiller is slightly off but it pulls and shoots even so its good enough for me , id love any criticism or feedback yall have to offer !. its a 55 # @28  osage selfbow with just enough curves ! :o :o really wish I could add more pics :(

You did a fine job with that piece of 'sage. And. I like that grip, also.

Ideally, the limbs should bend a little less in the inner thirds and more in middle.

I think the glue lines at the overlays look fine. Handle is nice too, though this type of bow usually behaves better with pressure at the heel of the hand, rather than at the web of the thumb. Your handle is more a of a recurve  style.

It's great when a bow shoots well and feels good in hand. You are properly pleased with that. Thanks for giving us a look.

I agree with what a couple others have said...outer mid-limb (outer 3rd) seems a bit stiff and needs more bend.  Other than that, nice bow.  It is a real good feeling to cross that barrier of finaly making a bow that is pleasing to shoot.  When it happened to me, I fully realized that I really could make a bow that could compete with modern bows, and I no longer needed the fiberglass, just wood from the forest.  Now go shoot a deer this fall with that thing.

How do we know it needs more mid limb bend when we haven't seen it un-braced? He could have 3" of mid limb reflex in it for all we know, that would make his tiller perfect.

  • If the wood will bend, I'll make it beautiful!
