my youngest daughter's making her first bow
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:12:11 am »
I was in the shop this afternoon futzing around with this and that and my youngest daughter Moyra came out to see what I was up to.  She watched me for a bit and then asked if she can make a bow.  I've been hoping for that request from one of my kids for a very long time so I said sure!  I asked what kinda bow she'd like to make and she said "a Rich Bow".  Ok says I, now lets pick out the wood.  She picked out a 50" tree of heaven stave.  I bandsawed the front profile and rough thickness taper and showed her how to use the draw knife to remove the bark.  She did a good job on that so I showed her how to clean off the remaining cambium with the scraper.  She cleaned it right up. Next I showed her how to clean up the edges with the surform and round off the edges with a fine cut rasp.  Took her a bit, but she got it lookin pretty good.  That was as far as we got before Momma rang the supper bell.  Hopefully she'll stay interested long enough to finish it.  Here she is working on the cambium.  Josh
