I haven't had much time for bow work lately but I sure am enjoying all the work you guys are posting. Hopefully I can get  back at it before too long.

finally happy with the new tips ;D and these ones will never come off >:D

tip over/underlays are yew and osage(that wont get my in trouble will it >:D)

Dylan: That's a pretty sweet fix and a cool bow! What wood was that again?

It's a super nice day in Mpls and finally I could start working on the black walnut stave Fred sent over. I ran into something I thought I'd ask about before going to far. As I worked the layers of bark I got to this tan surface, it was an 1/8 of an inch on one side of the stave and none or maybe paper thin on the other side. It's harder than the other layers before this but I just want to make sure I'm still taking this  off to until I get to the white wood? The different thickness of it confused me.

I ran into one of the sister staves like that but it wasn't as dominant. I think that's cambium directly under the bark.

Dylan, fantastic job. I'm super impressed and know someone that's going to be elated. Also as soon as you've played with it to your satisfaction you can ship before you get to attached.  :laugh:

Joachim, that cambium makes a great looking back but I don't know how strong it is. You might PM Gundoc because he's made more black walnut bows than anyone I know. The first one I made turned out excellent but I didn't leave that much on.

yup.  it isn't quite in the center, but it doesn't twist in my hand or anything, so I think it will be good to go.  If you are ready to ship, then I will look forward to my new bow soon ;D

Got about an hour or so to work on the bow yesterday, almost done with the fence but my helpers ran off so I had to take a break from it.  Anywho, I got the PlanA stave profiled in, sides roughed in with hatchet and rasp, belly roughed in.  Overall the stave is about an inch thick, not bending much at all yet.  It's got a little bit of prop twist on one end, and it's got some reflex/deflex issues to even out some.  I hope to get the heat gun on that guy this weekend for the minor corrections, and then thin the tips a little more and get them flipped some.

Don't mind the colorful clamp protector - got to use what you have on hand ;).
