shipping liquids question

I get asked if there is flammable, perishables, liquids or hazardous materialz when i ship. Today i shipped bbq sauce home made in two mason jars. I said no to the question but, if i said yes, what would they have said? If it breaks in shipping, could/will i be in trouble for lying to the post office?

Yup.  Postal inspectors have the same authority as a US Marshall.

Consequently, I am severing all ties with you and I repudiate all claims that I ever know you.  I will not visit you in jail, either.  If I hear your name spoken I will spit on the ground and draw a counterclockwise circle in the dust with my left foot. You are dead to me, you hear?

(When I ship a jar of honey, I also double bag it in ziplock freezer bags and really pack the Styrofoam around it nice and tight.  I have heard it takes up to half an hour to extract the jar from the packaging from some recipients.)

I can attest to JWs wrapping he does for his honey. You need a good gulp of the honey when done unwrapping just to get some energy back.  ;D
  I always tell the postal clerk what I'm shipping and add fragile to the labeling. I also send valuable or fragile stuff PRIORITY MAIL. Fewer hands touch Priority stuff so it is less apt to be damaged.
 I guess if your BBQ bottles break and damage someone else's stuff you could be held liable if you didn't claim it fragile or liquid.

Man.... I hope it will be ok. My recipient would sure be upset to get a box of broken glass and goo.

Products like that are shipped all the time. I don't know what they would say. good packing is essential.
