Wood burner on stained wood?
« on: January 05, 2016, 04:31:39 pm »
Can you use a wood burner on already stained wood? I'm working on a little project for my 2 year old son. I'm making an oversized ruler to keep track of his height with. I was planning on staining the board then using paint and a clear finish over top of the paint. I have already stained it but now I think I might like to burn the lines and number in before clear coating it. What say you?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work...  If you want to be sure, stain a piece of scrap wood and try burning it.

Yeah I will for sure have to practice on scrap because I'm not proficient in wood burning. I guess I'll stain a piece when I get home

I've done it on stained, finished wood. The only thing I noticed is that it browns a lot faster and some times the finish bubbles a bit.

I don't think you can with Minwax. It has a polymer in it, I think.
