I'm just wondering what you guys think I should do with this narrow piece of osage. I've been scratching my head and looking at it for the last hour.

me, id try tieing a plumb bob to a rafter, then holding the stave up to that string see how it goes down the stave. is there a "handle" area it crosses from one end to the other? will you need to shorten it to make everything line up {tips and handle} . maybe need to heat bend a few areas? whatever you do your going to want the tips to line up with the handle.whatever happens in between is just fine long as theres no monster knots.theres a bow in there, i seen it :) Tony

It's definitely going to need some straightening. Do you guys think I could get by with 64" or shorter and bend through the handle?

That don't look too bad, as long as you can get the string on the handle your fine
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

I would lay out a center line by following the longitudinal grain just like it is then lay the bow out from there, after a little floor tillering I would do what ever it needs to get things lined up  on the handle and tips with dry heat or steam depending on how old the wood is. :) You will have to follow the snake or it will never hold. Good looking piece of wood, challenging but nice just the same. :)

Looks like you might be on a few rings there.

I've got a center line drawn following the grain. The wood is pretty old. I can't remember how old but at least 5 yrs plus.

There is a few spots I need to scrape but I should be on a ring. This piece has a lot of darker coloration in it.

Dry heat will do everything you will need.
