Sinewed heartwood pacific yew
« on: November 21, 2015, 05:55:06 pm »
I was talking with Carson just lately and he reminded me to post this bow from a stave he sent me some time ago.I sent it to him but not to this forum. So I have a yew bow now. It's a 64"TTT,62.5"NTN holmgaard.52#@ 28"Covered the sinew with birch bark.Used a jute string wrap handle.Silk wraps.Sheep horn overlays on tips.Think I started with almost 6" of reflex and it holds a good 3.75" resting right now.Smooth fun bow to shoot & I've shot it a lot.The rings were about 25 to the inch in the heartwood and the sapwood was higher around 40.Nothing wrong with the sapwood.Just was'nt trusting enough of the violations on the back.I know people who are familiar with yew it does'nt  bother them a bit.I just went the safe route. It has the usual brace heighth of 5 and 5/8" with the 9 strands of fast flight plus string. Some musk ox woolys on there too.Would like to try this wood again too.Very easy to work with.Did'nt give me any trouble at all.
Here's the stave

That bow turned out very nice! Super tiller and I also like the birch bark cover.
Here at my home is a good population of birch, but can't get out a larger piece of thin bark. Maybe it is another species?

Thanks fellas.Simson I wish I had a lot of access to birch bark too here but I don't.I got mine from a guy from Spokane,Washington.John Lindman. He's a former regular bow maker and knows about the PA.He makes birch bark canoes now and gets all of his birch bark from Siberia. It's pretty nice stuff.Any size piece you might want.I know you could do wonders with the stuff on some bows.

Nice one Beadman.
Simon, your birch is a different species but it's virtually identical to ours. With smaller trees you can just use shorter pieces put on diagonally and slightly overlapped.

Beadman, glad you posted this one up. With nearly four inches of reflex, I bet that thing really rips them! Beautiful work all around.  8)
