is this hophornbeam?
« on: February 14, 2008, 11:45:02 pm »
              Hi everyone,

I know there are a lot of experienced people here, and I was hoping someone could help me identify this log. A guy I work with said he would get me some ironwood to try and make a bow out of. Well today I get to work and he has two eight foot logs in the back of truck. Both are from the same tree. the upper section of the tree, that log is skinnier and knottier than the lower log. It seems to be quit heavy for its size, the lower log at its widest point is approx. 7 inches across. Both logs have very tight rings. i will try to post pics
i always wanted a harley, untill it became the "thing to ride"
i ride because i love to,not to be part of the crowd

Looks like it to me but other characteristics will help to ID it better. If he said it is ironwood and it has bark that looks like that, I'd say it is HHB.    Pat

The bark looks like HHB. Looks like it might have a little twist in it, too. It's hard to find a HHB tree around here that doesn't.

I'm pretty sure it's either HHB or Elm like Pappy said. A nother picture showing in detail the entire log might help.  :)

If it is hornbeam it is HHB.The smooth bark everyone seem to call American Hornbeam
is what we call Muscel wood or Blue Beach. This always seem to come up. :)

I am going to have to dig my Peterson's Field guide to Eastern Trees out when I get home.
If I am not mistaken the names are opposite in my field guide.

We may have to start using "Muscle Wood" and "That Other Tree" in order to talk about these two.

Looks like HHB to me. And the tight ringed description matches with my experience of HHB in my area.

EXCELLENT, and thanks to all for the help. :) :)

now,if I'm not pushing my luck, what would be the best way to split and store this log? would i need to strip the bark right away, or could i wait until summer,it's getting kinda chilly around here these days. sucks with no heat out in the garage.
