Yew Longbow 35#@28"
« on: November 08, 2015, 08:25:08 pm »
I haven't made many bows this year, it's been quite busy. We had a new baby, moved to a smaller town and I started a new job. Enough excuses, here is a bow I have been chipping away all year and finally finished.

This bow is a yew longbow that draws 35#@28" and is 66" long, nock to nock. The piece of wood was a branch from a large yew tree that had fallen. It's gnarly and snakey with a bit of decay in the sapwood. I didn't want to do anything too extreme given the character of the stave so I opted for a light weight longbow. It was a pain to tiller given the whoop-de-doos but it came out to be a smooth and surprisingly lively shooter. I had so much fun shooting it in, I didn't want to stop. The top limb has a big dog leg and over all deflex and the bottom limb is straighter and more well behaved. This led to a tiller that appeared uneven to the eye so I had to focus on making sure that both limbs were doing their fair share of work despite what I saw. This was a fun bow to make.

Thanks, Traxx! It was fun. I don't often shoot light weight bows. It's a pleasure.

Thank you, bowandarrow!

Thanks, DC!

Thanks, wizardgoat. The branches are definitely fun. A different challenge than a stave. The overlays were a play off of John Strunk's arrowhead overlays.

Dude! Those limb tips are killer! That's a sweet looking bow. What material are the tips?

Congrats on the baby and other changes :)
Cool work on that bow, great detail.
Classy 'up into the sky' picture, really shows the character.

That sure is a beautiful bow! Lots of character, just the way I like them. You made that ugly stick, beautiful! Well done!
