My first hamon.

I wasn't really expecting  to get a hamon when I did an edge quench but I etched it anyways and got a pleasant surprise. My first hamon. This knife is also number 50!

80crv2 steel black linen micarta and kydex sheath with a teklok.

Thank you DC. There's so many different styles, steel, handle materials, and techniques in bladesmithing it'd take a few life times to try them all and finally get burnt out lol.

Since I don't have any experience in hardening steel, I have an elementary question. How do you distribute the clay on the steel? How thick is it? does it have to feather out as it nears the cutting edge? How do you keep it on while heating the blade?

No clay on this one, all I did was quench the edge. There's only a few steels that you can get a hamon on. 1095 w2 1084 and apparently 80crv2

I'm not much up on metal working so I don't know what a harmon is.
Seems like it is an (hardening) of the blade edge by a quench in(oil? water?)
Is the color change the hall mark?
Nevertheless it must be great to accomplish a new method whether you
mean to or not. I'd say it's another feather in your cap. Congratulations
