couple more simple points
« on: October 21, 2015, 07:49:46 pm »
Still trying to get back into the swing of it.....literally.  I'm still struggling with my percussion strike accuracy, but it is gradually improving. The first pic is an obsidian point I chipped out while unloading today.  The second pic is another piece of that Texas cobble after a bad shot with the antler billet.  The last two pics are of what I managed to save from the bigger piece.  Thanks for lookin!  Josh

Is your cobble Edwards? Looks like it. If it's not heat treated it tends to
make you smack it harder. But I have knapped some that had a way different
cleavage to it that would break like that all the time. The flakes would come
off plump and leave deep scars??
The ones you have completed look ready for the woods. :)

Thanks fellas!  It's heat treated, but I don't know the origin or specific type.  It's landscaping rock at one of my customers in Houston.  I tried working some raw last week and blistered my hands so bad that I just now felt like having another go.  That stuff is TOUGH!  Lol!  Josh

Those look great Josh! I wish I could do that! Only thing is those all have what Missouri calls barbs on them. Can't hunt with those here.  But you could have fooled me that you are out of practice. Nice points.

Thanks Steve!  Yes you are overdue.  How's the pipe coming along?
Thanks Patrick!  I just checked the DNR website for point regulations on stone points in Missouri and found nothing.  So I have a message in to them asking for specifics.  A lot of States have done away with the barbed prohibition language in their regs. If i get an answer, I'll be sure to share it.  Josh

I sent a guy some nice points for his buddy that wanted to take a buffalo.
I asked him what happened on the hunt. He said they were barbed and he couldn't use them. He never sent them back either. >:(
I can't for the life of me figure why barbs wouldn't be an asset to a kill??
Let us know what you find out Doc.

Thanks Josh, I've never really made a big effort to look that up. I have just always went with what I've always been told. But times change, maybe I should read more!

Good news for Patrick and anyone else hunting in Missouri.  I just received a reply from the Missouri department of conservation in regards to stone point regulations.  The responder stated that according to the Missouri wildlife code, there are no regulations or restrictions in regards to point size, weight or barbs for there use in archery or atlatl deer season.   How cool is that!  She also mailed me an information packet including all I need to know about non resident atlatl hunting in Missouri.  This is something John and I have been talking about doing for a few years now.  I'm pretty stoked on the whole deal! Sweet Josh! Thanks for checking on that stuff and letting me know!

Oh the endless possibilities now!

When you're ready to come to Missouri and atlatal hunt let me know. I know some great places on public land! Maybe a private spot if we're lucky!
