splicing a power lam?

Would I be ok to splice together my power lam with say a z splice, or would it be smarter to keep it one piece?

All a power lam does is stiffens the handle area to keep it from bending. A "Z" splice should be adequate to do this.

I sometimes just cut a 45 degree angle on internal splices like lams and then butt them up. Doesn't seem to be much stress on the joint

Sleek and I did one a while back that pretty much just had a scarf joint like Badger said. Ours was on the core wood. It didn't hurt a thing!
