im trying to decide between a .22 over .410 or a .22mag/.410 for a survival gun. i have a 22lr already so im leaning towards 22 mag but am still not sure as to which is the better all around gun.

side question, (i have gotten very mixed responses on this one) can you shoot slugs from a full choke shotgun? my intuition says no.

I have two 410/22's. Those are my go to squirrel, small game guns. And I've shot slugs out of them.

I would think it would depend mostly
on where you need to survive.
NY City- LA a Glock 31/.357 would be best.
In wide open spaces I would recommend a .243
well scoped.
In the foothill forests a .22 is all you need. light and small.
In thickets and corn fields a 20ga with shot and slugs
would be my choice.

A well placed shot from a 22 will get the same results as a 22 magnum.....

I have always been told not to shoot slugs from a full choke...get a slug rifled barrel if you want to shoot them.

I agree with NC and for another reason also.
Mag = much more money.
Also 410 = more money and over-under, side by side are heavier.
You never told us Where you would like to Survive. LOL

Im in central cariboo region of b.c. all i wanna decide on is which model of chiappa doubl badger woukd be better considering i already have a .22. Would i still be better off with a .22 or would a mag be better for big game while the .410 could still do squirrels and stuff? I know i want the chiappa double badger. I just like em. But LR or mag?

To me it would depend on what you plan on hunting and how much shooting you plan on doing with the 22. I know the 22 mag amo is a bit expensive but you can take down bigger game with the mag including Deer and yes even Bear with a well placed shot. The slugs can do the same thing but with limited range. I have always used slugs in any of my shotguns and they all had a full choke

I would and have relied heavily on a good quality and well scoped pellet rifle. You will for a fact run across more smallgame than large. Also ammo is quiet, cheap, and very light weight and portable. Not to mention reliable. dont ignore the pellet gun.

Is a 22 mag too big for like grouse and rabbits and squirrel? Where a mag is too big would the .410 barrel compensate? Or would you use the .22 and figure a slugh from the .410 would do the big game? Lol i just cant decide. I meab a gead shot is a gead shot and i try to head shot my small game anyways. And like i said i do still have a .22. Grrrrrr deciding things is so frustrating for me. They both have merrits

the last dime I was in B.C. I saw a lot of nice big game. wished I could hunt there.

if you enjoy hunting and see more of it in your future, you will probably eventually want a .22 and a 12ga and a decent center fire rifle (or a similar selection.)

I know that you are asking about the combo gun, but if you buy a 12ga or '06 for your next gun, you will be 2/3 gunned up, and should be able to handle any survival situation that arises

ive got a 3030 a 303 a 22 a 3006 and a twelve guage. im plenty gunned up. so, .22 or .22 mag over .410?

22/410, You already have the bullets for the 22 and if you can head shoot what you want there is no need for the Mag. I've dropped 90% of the hogs I've killed down here with a 22 by head shooting them. And you don't gain much for range by shooting a 22mag.The reason I use a 22/410 during small game season is we can take hogs, also.

I don't remember all the details but I do remember reading many years ago of a guy killing a Grizzly in BC with a head shot using a 22 Mag, I don't remember if it was coming at him or going after his partner. You can get 22 Mag amo in hollow point and FMJ for some serious penetration

P.S. I got rid of my 22 Mag a long time ago because of it's lack of versatility and cost of amo
