Yew Shorty NW Style
« on: September 27, 2015, 12:23:52 pm »
I'm calling this one finished. I've been working on it for several months and letting the sinew cure. It is Yew with 5 layers of sinew, Knox and boiled down rawhide and sinew scraps glue. It is 48" nock to nock, 46# @ 27". It is 2" wide coming out of the handle area and tapering to 3/4" at the tips. I wrapped the handle area with rawhide strips soaked in hide glue three layers thick. I've shot a lot of arrows through this bow and it goes right back to it's rested form after unstringing it.

The orange color I made by running clay through 200 mesh screens and then mixing the silts with hide glue. The black color is Tempera paint. And the bow is sealed with deer tallow and bee's wax.

Cool looking weapon, looks like it fits perfect.
I like your clay paint job and the decoration is nice too.

Plenty of draw out of that shorty!

Thanks, Gentlemen, I was trying to squeeze what I could out of it. Three layers of sinew didn't doo much but when I added the other two and stiffened up the middle it turned into a zippy little bow.

Very nice Eddie.  Do you think it will be ok with the humidity down there?

Thanks, Marc. I have several sinew bows. I try to set them in the hot sun when I take a break from shooting and store them in the house. The air conditioner pretty much runs 24/7. The bow I have a lot of trouble with is my horn bow. I'm constantly have to make minor adjustments.

Very cool to see that much draw length out of a 48" bow, looks good at full draw too. You gotta be pleased with the way that turned out. I know I would be.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.
