Pics or it didn't happen eh?
« on: September 17, 2015, 12:09:48 pm »
Well it happened again. Here it is! A turtle to a point. A broken point, 4th one of the day.  >:(

Started my bopping with some pretty steep angles with flat side up shooting to takeout the mountain.

Too steep of an angle and it snapped in half.

Big end thickness

And after some pressure flaking on that bigger half I loaded too much pressure with not nearly enough support.

Huge thanks to Patrick for teaching me about photo bucket

May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short. Amen.

I've done pretty similar reduction. If you cock it up at a steep angle, as you have said, you can shoot flakes over the top of "the hill."

And I have broken many in two as well...too many!

Well, that's just frustrating. . .

No magic words for ya, Dylan. Just keep after it. Maybe reevaluate the way your holding the point in your hand. Sometimes I'm applying pressure I didn't realize, other times it's just a matter of not hitting my mark, and occasionally it's just a fault in the stone.

When using an ishi stick it's easy to snap a point if your palm pad is not stiff enough (some don't even use a pad,  :-\ )

I am no expert but you could try this---
Loose this lower side.
Abrade some of the patina for a good bite with
a deer antler billet or small copper bopper.

Stiffen your platforms with a fine abrader,
then grind your dominate ridges as well.
If your strikes are right you should be fairly
thin or at least semi bifacial. ???

It's been below 40 degrees most morning so I'm starting to wonder if my rock has some freeze cracks. Most of my pressure flaking is done on a pad with a wood base and slotted foam on top. And those gloves are new, bought em after I started shooting over flakes into my hand. Still usually knap barefoot and in shorts if the weather is 50+ degrees.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short. Amen.

You're welcome Dylan! Anytime!

You sure are breaking a lot of rock. I can't wait to get those points you're making. Especially after all the effort you are putting in them!
