"The Ugly Stick" finished with pics.
« on: September 14, 2015, 12:25:00 pm »
Here is a little experiment I have been working on the last week or so, it is not finished but I thought I would put it up and ask some advice.  It is a piece of Crepe Myrtle I found across the street in my neighbors yard where the tree trimmers came through and cleared underneath the power lines.  It is 44" long and has a belly laminate of ERC glued to it, it is about 1 1/8" wide and pulls 47# @ 21".  The tiller is not perfect the top limb is still a little stiff in the outer third but I will get that corrected.  The advice I need is how do i get the bark off with out damaging the back?  As you can see in the pictures it has lots of cracks and is kind of freaky to shoot with it cracking like rice crispys.

The tiller looks already incredible! A few scrapes and you're ready!
The back -huuuh- I can hear the sound, had it often with yew with bark on. Here it popped off while tillering or shooting. Maybe you can lift the crisps with a srewdriver very carefully?

Good luck! This is a great bow

Could you stand to just leave it? After a bit most of the bark will chip of and you can put your finish over what's left. Primo primitive!!

Thanks for the reply's, I may just leave it and carefully flake off the chips with a knife when they loosen enough.

It is finished, it is 42 inches nock to nock and pulls 47# at 21 inches.  I ran into a snag but overcame it.  After finishing it, it decided to raise a splinter on the back. When it cracked my heart sank but I glued it down with some CA glue and wrapped it with some backstrap sinew and so far it is holding together well and shooting fine.  The back is stained with a vinegaroon stain and sealed with true oil.  Here are the pics I hope you like it.

Man, I like that a lot! It is really straightforward. It's a bow.
I love it when a plan B comes together....
