Author Topic: Entemology question? What is this thing? (Read 2571 times)

While splitting some black locust logs a friend brought me yesterday I found this little critter on a tree. I have no idea of where to even start looking at what it is. It looks sort of like a wasp or hornet but is enough different that I have no clue. It looks like it it has a stinger in addition to what looks like ovipositor tube. And is pushing on 2" long. Anyone have any idea what it is?

It didn't take quite as much looking as I thought to find what I think it is. Which I think is a woodborer wasp. I'm not positive that what it is, but it sure is neat looking?

I found two so far here in western NY curious myself as to what it is (I thought it was a yellow jacket on roids at first)

it isn't a wasp, it is a Pigeon Tremex. It looks like one, but isn't.

There are some similar little critters in Florida. I watched one, drill a hole, in a small crack, on a dead limb, and lay it's eggs. It had a two piece saw like protrusion at the end of it's abdomen, and it sawed each side separately, one after the other. Pretty neat, and effective. 8
