Slightly Ticked
« on: September 04, 2015, 01:30:29 am »
Hope I dont jinx it.

So heres the story. I was visiting Patrick a while back. We hadnt known each other long yet. I mentioned my fav hunting bow had broken and though I had very serviceable bows, none I was connected to.  Well, he goes in his houseand brings me a short 54" stave rough cut out.

Now let me tell you about this stave. Its 1 1/8 wide at its widest. It has sideways bend in it by a few inches. It has a very reflexed handle. One limb comes out the handle reflexed then goes into a slow severe deflex. The other shoots out straight after deflexing at the handle. I took it to check it out and was about to comment on what a mess this thing is when he says, "Here, now you got a hunting bow! " I look up searching his face sure to see some mischief in his expression.  There was nothing there. I think he was serious.  So, not wanting to seem ungrateful I take it graciously and stick it in my truck, wondering what I had done to piss him off this bad to give me a stave like this.

I take it home and look at it. What the deuce am I gonna with this? Ha! Nice guy i thinks to myself, and I toss it I to the closet of shame. There it sat and languished for months. Until one day im digging in the closet of shame to rob a limb of another messed up bow and I see it. I pull it out and look at it again as I had done a few times. Then it hits me. This stave looks exactly like Pats trade bow he made "Fury". This stave lookes identical to the T as fury did as a stave.  Well, there is only one thing to do when the motivation hits you, jump on it. The dishes havent been done in three days.

Well, from here I think pics can do the rest of the talking. Pat, thanks for the stave, you pain in my a...... ( honestly though, I need an asprin )

Edited to add, I am actually happy to have gotten that stave, even though I really had no idea what to do with it at the time. I did learn some things on this and was lucky to get it. Thanks buddy.

I needed more reflex. This iss how you modify caul shape with wedges. Roumd your corners well or they dent the bow.

This is where I do most my tillering. I get brace perfect then start pulling back. It reduces breakage by, a lot!

Full brace now. The tips open more than I like, but its so short a bow, I dont know how else I could have done it.

My tiller tree. Some of you may get a kick out of this. I use a branch to hold the string then pull down. This was a stave. Dont know if it will even be a bow. Idk what wood it is.

Right limb in the pic wasnt bending enough out the fade or near the tips. I adjusted that. I was 48#@24 there.

All adjustments made. This is the moment of truth. Will a 54" stiff handle hold at 26"?
