Remember, EPA did not create this toxic cocktail.  This was the result of mining, and the ultimate responsibility is for the mine to have safeguards in place, and/or clean up the mess.  As for the EPA employee that screwed up?  Well, I get a sense this person may be working on their resume' at this time.

JW while the mine created the cocktail, the EPA deposited it in this waterway its a damn shame, in my area we have iron mountain one of the most toxic spots in the world as nor cal was one of the premiere copper ore suppliers back in the day, they say that if you leave a shovel in the water in the mine it would rust out by morning, they need to not worry about blame and clean the river up before they have an iron mountain

Is there not a way to clean/filter the water after the mines use?
Rather than storing it as such a toxic mess.

Seems like with todays technology we can do anything we want to.

I think the mine has been closed since 1912?
I guess they were trying to clean things up that were stored there.
It's the heavy metals that will fall out of the water solution to the
bottoms of the water courses that is the main problem.
Clean - up impossible even with the EPA's budget (your tax dollar).
They created a bigger bio-hazard than the mine did.

The issue is improper planning of how to take care of the issue. Kinda like storing barrels on site. You have to have a catch around them that will contain 50% of the volume. for whatever reason these guys started at the top and are surprised that when it got away from them and into the river. It really is a shame, the Animas river is beautiful. beyond the issue that everyone down stream is now SOL.
