Rebuilt grip
« on: August 10, 2015, 06:57:54 am »
I made a hickory backed ipe a while back I called "Howard". The grip was mostly a Hill style and the truth is, I hated how it felt. So it hung on a peg for months. When I walked by the bow to get to my shop I could see great bow potential if I rebuilt the grip and fade area. I finally did this weekend, and love it. The bow is a riot to shoot now, and quite accurate and quick. I used hickory, ipe Unibond 800. The rest is saddle leather and super glue. I'll wrap it with deer leather after I seal it all back up as I stripped it complete and started from scratch. I'm glad I finally took the time.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
Sometimes a project needs to sit for a while and then be picked up again.
Cool to have got it how you want, good job :)

I can hunt with it now Del. I rarely build a bow for myself that I cant comfortably hunt with.

I hope the pics show clearly how easy it is to make that grip. Glue, clamp, rasp.

What are the dimensions on your belly slat?  My next project is a Hickory backed Ipe and Im shooting for about 45# at 28".  I love the handle it looks great and I'll bet it is very comfortable to shoot.

Grady start with 5/8" slats so your riser section stays stuck. The bow is 1" wide at the fades, 69" ntn, solid 55 @ 28". The back is thin, under 3/16" after sanding and rounding.

My buddy Cody hated the grip, so it had to be changed :)

Looks great man, I'm not a fan of how a hill grip feels or looks

Ya ground off the Hill riser completely?
