any advise on mystery wood?
« on: August 04, 2015, 11:48:06 am »
got a stave from a friend who said he thought it was hickory, but not knowing for certain i don't know how best to handle it. i have no particular design in mind but would like to achieve with this build, flipped tips, which i have never done before. now if it is hickory, the staves i get (should be 2 usable) will have a slight crown since the stave is only so big, should i worry about that or start shaving and keep the width full through the stave and side tiller once i get the bow so bent (don't know how far I should go). am i over thinking and being timid because this is my first stave bow.

Hickory likes to have a crowned back and a flat belly.
Try to post some pics of the stave, so we can give you some specific advise, and perhaps ID the wood species.
